Purpose. The aim of this article is to study the state of financial literacy of the population of Ukraine, as well as to develop ways to increase its level, taking into account advanced foreign experience.
Methodology of research. The methodological basis of the research is the scientific methods of cognition, which are based on a systematic approach to the solution of the tasks. A number of general and special scientific research methods have been used to achieve the goal and to obtain the results of the study: dialectical; monographic (when working out scientific publications); system analysis (when studying the state of financial literacy of the population of the country); the method of analogies and comparisons (in the study of international practice for training financial literacy of the population); complex analysis (when forming conclusions and proposals for the solution of the tasks) and others.
Findings. On the basis of the analysis of theoretical and methodological approaches, the essence of the category “financial literacy” is disclosed. The state of financial literacy of the population in Ukraine is investigated, the reasons for the unsatisfactory situation in this area are determined. The necessity of raising the financial literacy of the population is grounded on the state level. Thus, ensuring the effective implementation of state policy in this direction should be regulated by a certain strategic document. In order to increase the level of financial literacy of the population, taking into account advanced foreign experience, the necessity of introducing the following measures is grounded: to start acquaintance of children with basic economic notions from an early age; for students and students it is necessary to develop special courses on financial literacy and to consolidate them as compulsory in curricula; create a system for teaching teachers to acquire the relevant competences and transfer the received knowledge to the younger generation; to promote raising the level of financial literacy for all segments of the population through the organization of appropriate master classes, round tables, lectures, seminars, conferences, printing methodological literature, etc .; create appropriate information and advisory centers for assisting the population on insurance issues, as well as banking, financial, tax services, etc.; to involve the media more actively in the field of financial literacy activities, to use social networks, to develop a specialized website for the development of skills in the financial issues of different sectors of the population.
Originality. The scientific novelty of the research is to clarify the essence of the category “financial literacy” and to develop practical recommendations for increasing the financial literacy of the population of the country by different age groups, taking into account advanced foreign experience.
Practical value. The results of the study will help raise the level of financial literacy of the Ukrainian population.
